Myra Gordon presenting 'The Talented Tenth' at noon today in Hale Library

Submitted by Zelia Wiley

During 2013, the Black Faculty and Staff Alliance has celebrated the university's 150th anniversary by featuring members of the faculty and their research. Our December presenter is Myra Gordon, associate provost for diversity. She will present "The Talented Tenth: Redefining Black Student Leadership" at noon today in the Hemisphere Room at Hale Library. Refreshments will be served.

The Black Faculty and Staff Alliance was organized in the early 1980s as a voice for African-Americans at K-State. Since that time, the group has held numerous activities and completed service projects to benefit the K-State and Manhattan communities. Early members included James Boyer, Prentice Baptiste, Reginland McGowan, Juanita McGowan, Kathy Greene and Veryl Switzer. The alliance is also interested in promoting the recruitment and retention of black faculty, staff and students and serves as an advisory committee to the president.

The alliance's activities include advocating for the recruitment and retention of black faculty, staff and students through serving on university search committees, acting as a support group for black professionals on campus, providing recognition programs for outstanding achievements, and providing book scholarships to active members of the Black Student Union.

Membership is open to any Kansas State University employee, individual, organization or group interested in promoting the interests, activities and goals of the alliance. The meetings are monthly during the school year.
