International Education Week begins at noon today

Submitted by mary pyle

International Education Week begins at noon today with Willie the Wildcat's Great Study Abroad Adventure and "Hey Dude, Where's my Stuff?" contest in the K-State Student Union display cases by Cats' Den and art gallery.

The office of international programs announces two of the three awardees for the K-State International Awards Ceremony from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Alumni Center. The ceremony will recognize three categories of exceptional service:

  • Outstanding support to the office of international programs
  • 2013 innovative education program of the year
  • 2013 international educator of the year

Formally called the International Educator of the Year award reception, the office of international programs changed the name of the reception to recognize additional individuals making significant contributions to advancing international initiatives at Kansas State University.

Housing and dining services will be recognized with the first Outstanding Support to International Initiatives Award, given by the office of international programs' leadership team. Derek Jackson, the director of housing and dining services at K-State, will accept the award on behalf of housing and dining. Sara Thurston-Gonzalez, director international student scholar services, and Jackson created the first international student housing committee on the campus to better serve the increasing number of international students requiring on-campus housing.

The 2013 Innovative Education Program of the Year will be presented to the Brazilian government, recognizing its investment and commitment in transforming education in Brazil through the Brazilian Science Mobility Program. Marcelo Sabates, interim associate provost of the office of international programs, extended a formal invitation to the Brazil Embassy and it just informed us that Pedro Saldanha, the embassy adviser for the educational sector, will visit the university on Nov. 19 to accept the award on the behalf of the Brazilian government and meet with students from the science mobility program.

The International Educator of the Year award recipient will be announced later this week. This award recognizes one faculty, staff, administrator or other member of the K-State community for his or her major contributions and sustained commitment to advancing international education at K-State. This award event provides an opportunity for the office of international programs to acknowledge those who have been responsible for elevating the level of international awareness across our campus.

The International Award Ceremony is planned for International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide and promote cultural understanding.

Please join us in celebrating with the winners at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Alumni Center. Celebrate and promote international education and exchange all week long.
