K-State Bike to Work Week: May 2-6

Submitted by Ben Champion

K-State Bike Week 2011

The month of May is National Bike Month. To celebrate, the week of May 2-6 will be the second annual Manhattan Bike to Work Week and the Commuter's Challenge. Host of the event is the city of Manhattan.

To recognize the city's and K-State's commitment toward providing safe and friendly bike infrastructure, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the Commuter's Challenge during Bike to Work Week.

Departments and other campus units can sign up in less than 60 seconds at: Bike Week.

After that, simply let faculty and staff know that they should log their hours biked on the sheets downloadable at bike forms.

If you're a passionate bicyclist, spread the word in your department and ask your department head to sign up your department. If you're a department head, please share this opportunity with your staff/faculty.

To determine the winner, each team will be assessed according to the average number of miles biked per person in your department compared with other teams citywide. The winning team will win a free party sponsored by Tallgrass Brewery.

Along with the party, other great reasons to participate in this year's Commuter Challenge and to continue biking to work include:

• Reduce car maintenance, gas bills and parking costs

• Staying in better health decreases your chance of getting sick

• Bicycle commuting allows you to include your workout in your daily schedule and helps to meet fitness goals

• Increase energy throughout the day

• Improved health and happiness

We encourage you to pass this opportunity along to everyone in your department as well as your colleagues in other departments. Thank you and good luck.
