March 19 brownbag on open access, scholarly publishing and the future of academic research

Join Ryan Otto, digital scholarship librarian, to learn more about the role of open access in publishing and the future of academic research. This important conversation starts at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, in Town Hall at the Leadership Studies Building.
Topics Otto will cover in his presentation:
- An overview of open access as a concept.
- Legal concepts underlying open access and academic publishing.
- Issues stemming from shifting costs to researchers and authors.
Perhaps most importantly, Otto will address the actions K-State researchers can take today: How can you make your work open access? How will you engage with the changing landscape of academic research? How can we impact the future of publishing and access?
The event will be part overview and part discussion. Feel free to bring your lunch.
This brownbag is one in a series of talks called "Publishing, Access and the Future of Academic Research." Each installment will be tied in some way to the serials crisis and its impact on academic institutions.
At K-State, the fallout from untenable subscription increases include a spending moratorium on collections and impending subscription cuts. A list of titles under consideration for cancellation will be released after spring break.
Librarians have been reaching out to faculty and departments to learn more about each area's current teaching and research needs. If you have not made contact with your librarian, we strongly encourage you to act now. These discussions will inform decisions regarding subscription nonrenewals later this spring. It will be the largest cut to date.
