TLC Bi-Weekly Newsletter for Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023

Welcome back, K-Staters!

We hope you have been able to recharge over the last couple of months. Welcome to the first week of the Fall 2023 semester. K-State values excellent teaching, and we at the Teaching & Learning Center (TLC) are here to promote and support your teaching success.

Return to Campus

As we start the Fall 2023 semester, we remain committed to supporting your efforts in teaching, mentoring, and advising through programs, events, and video series. This video explains what the TLC can do for you. We would like to remind you of several resources across our campus to support you and your teaching. Our “Mindful Returns” toolkit compiles K-State and external resources related to Mental Health, Physical Health, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, ad Belonging (DEIB), Empathy, Communication, and Student Success.

Programs & Events

We look forward to another semester of our Professional Development (PD) Series, and, again, these events will occur on Wednesdays at 12 noon via Zoom. All events are free, and no registration is required. As we finalize our PD Series, we will post the schedule on the Upcoming Events page of our website and on our social media: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

  • On Wednesday, August 23rd, Don Saucier will lead off our PD Series with an event on sustainable excellent teaching to maintain your and your students’ engagement throughout the semester.

  • On Wednesday, August 30th, we will host our first Teaching CHAT of the semester. Feel free to bring questions to ask the group or to just sit back and listen. Our primary topic will be choosing course materials.

  • The TLC book club will read & discuss Cathy Davidson and Christina Katopodis’ The New College Classroom (2022). Join us on Friday, September 1st from 4-5pm at Union Station by JP’s and cover Chapter 6: “Activities for Any Day of the Term.” You can register here.

  • On Wednesday, September 6th, Andy Thompson, Director of the Office of Student Life, will lead a Need-To-Know event on supporting students at K-State.

Engage the Sage Videos to Support Excellent Teaching

We would like to remind you of several video resources as part of Dr. Don Saucier’s YouTube channel, Engage the Sage, that are particularly relevant for the beginning of the semester:

Thank You & Encouragement

We are grateful for your continued support of your students and colleagues and hope you take advantage of the resources available to you at K-State, including us at the TLC, throughout the upcoming semester. Thank you for all you do for your colleagues and our students. And thank you for advancing K-State’s teaching and learning mission with energy and optimism.

Sincerely,

The Teaching and Learning Center Team
