Dr John Kirkegaard (FAA) is a Chief Research Scientist at CSIRO in Canberra whose research teams develop innovative agronomic approaches to improve the efficiency of water use on farms for improved food security. Awarded the Eureka Prize in sustainable agriculture in 2014, he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2016. He is the proud father of 3 daughters with Julianne, and his Fulbright Distinguished Chair at Kansas State University (2026) aims to share research approaches to improve wheat production, a crop central to global food security and rural prosperity.

Kirkegaards Fulbright Distinguished Chair position at Kansas State University aims to share research approaches to improve rainfed wheat production in diverse wheat farming systems under challenging climates, and to build capacity and ongoing partnerships to propel the careers of the next generation of agronomists in Australia, the USA and beyond.
