HOW TO: Edit closed captions using the Mediasite caption editor

Mediasite includes a built-in tool for editing your presentation's closed captions. Normally, this tool is used to make corrections to existing captions created by a professional third-party service or by machine transcription tools like YouTube and IBM Watson. However, you can use the caption editor to manually create closed captions from scratch, recognizing it can be a time-consuming process.

Important Note: You should make any desired edits to your Mediasite video before you create and add captions. Mediasite will not automatically edit or remove portions of existing captions. For example, if a video already has captions, and you edit the video to remove the first 30 seconds of content, the existing captions will remain unchanged, meaning the captions will run 30 seconds behind the edited video. Creating and adding closed captions should occur after your final edit.

Open the caption editor

From within the list of presentations in your My Mediasite portal, select the name of the presentation for which you wish to edit the closed captions. A summary of the presentation will appear.
Select Edit Captions in the right column. The caption editor will appear.

Add/remove/change captions using the caption editor

Use the caption editor to add, remove, or modify the caption content. Save your work frequently using the Save button at the top right. Common caption editor operations are discussed below.

Edit Caption text and timing

Begin playback of the video preview within the caption editor to see the timing of cations along the timeline.
Drag the edge handles of a caption to adjust the timing.
Select a caption along the timeline to select it in the edit pane.
Edit the text as needed in the right-hand column.

Add Captions

Enter the caption text.
Select Add transcription at video position. The caption text will be added to the current video position.

Find and Replace

Select the Replace tab on the edit column of the caption editor.
Enter a search term in the Find field.
Select Find to view captions where the term appears.
Enter the replacement term in the Replace field.
Select Replace all to change all instances of the Find term with the Replace term.

Enable caption display and save your edits

Once all edits are complete within the editor, select Publish. This will enable your captions to be displayed in the video player your audience sees.
Select the down-arrow adjacent to the Save button and then select Save & Exit to apply the edited captions to the video and return to the presentation summary.
