HOW TO: Allow students to download presentations

As a manager of your Mediasite content, you can easily download your presentation within your My Mediasite portal. However, students access the Mediasite content differently, typically through the Canvas LMS. Once configured, students can access download options through the Mediasite channel and/or directly through the Mediasite player.

First, you must make the presentation itself downloadable by enabling podcast (audio) or vodcast (video) delivery. Then, depending on how you wish to distribute the download, you should enable the download permissions on the channel or configure the presentation to use a player where downloads are enabled.

Should I allow others to download my presentation?

While allowing others to downolad your audio or video may seem like a convenient option, please bear in mind that once your content has been downloaded, you can no longer control how that content is treated or distributed by the person who downloaded it. This option also carries implications for content subject to intellectual property restrictions that may legally prohibit others from downloading a copy of the content. Please be mindful of these considerations when deciding if you will allow others to download your Mediasite content.

Enable a downloadable delivery method

  1. From within the list of presentations in your My Mediasite portal, select the name of the presentation you wish make downloadable. A summary of the presentation will appear.

  2. Select Edit Details in the right column. Options for editing the presentation will appear.

  3. Select Delivery.

  4. Check the appropriate checkbox(es) to select your download format(s). There are two downloadable formats:

Podcast: Creates an audio-only MP3 file.

Video Podcast: Creates a single MP4 video file. Choose Vodcast MP4. Please note that video podcast creation for presentations longer than approximately three hours may fail.

Pro Tip: The "Vodcast MP4" option will add the presentation's banner to the top of the vodcast video. To create a vodcast video without the banner, choose "Vodcast MP4 No Banner."

  5. Select Save at the top-right.

Note: After enabling these options, the server must first create the MP3 podcast file or the MP4 vodcast file before the download option(s) will appear. Please be patient while the server creates the file(s), which can take several minutes to several hours, depending on the length of the presentation. The "Download Podcast" and/or "Download Vodcast" options will appear once file creation is complete.

Enable presentation download on a Mediasite channel

The easiest way to distribute Mediasite content in Canvas is by embedding a Mediasite collection of the content in your channel. You can enable an option in the channel's settings to show download options in the channel for any presentation where podcast and/or vodcast delivery is enabled.

  1. In your My Mediasite portal, select Browse Channels from the left navigation options.

  2. Select the name of the desired channel to view its summary.

  3. Select Edit from the top options and scroll to Options at the bottom.

  4. Under Channel Functionality, verify Allow Presentation Download is selected.

  5. Select Save.

When the students view the Mediasite collection in Canvas, they will see a download icon for presentations where podcast and/or vodcast delivery is enabled.

Enable presentation download in the Mediasite player

If you do not use Mediasite collections in your Canvas course and instead embed or link to presentations individually, you can allow students to download presentations within the player itself. This is done by configuring the Mediasite presentation to use a special player where the download feature is enabled. This player is not used by default.

  1. From within the list of presentations in your My Mediasite portal, select the name of the presentation you wish make downloadable. A summary of the presentation will appear.

  2. Select Edit Details in the right column. Options for editing the presentation will appear.

Edit button in the right column

  3. Select the Player tab.

  4. Select the name of the current player to open the list of available players.

  5. Select Multiview K-State Downloadable from the list.

  6. Select Save.

When the students view the Mediasite presentation in Canvas, they will see a download icon in the bottom-right corner of the player if podcast and/or vodcast delivery is enabled for the presentation.
