Pinkall nominated for Emmy with Kansas City Chorale

Submitted by School of Music, Theatre, and Dance

And the darkness

Associate Professor Bryan Pinkall, as a member of the Kansas City Chorale, received an Emmy nomination for "And the darkness has not overcome it" — a filmed collaboration between the chorale and Owen/Cox Dance Group.

Originally planned as a live concert, this collaboration evolved due to pandemic restrictions into a filmed, free virtual performance. Set to the Kansas City Chorale's recording of Sergei Rachmaninoff's "All Night Vigil," the piece was filmed during the height of a COVID-19 surge and features the first and fifth movements of Rachmaninoff's acclaimed work, premiering online Easter Sunday 2021.

"And the darkness has not overcome it" is nominated for Best Arts/Entertainment Short Form Content in the 46th National Association of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Emmy Awards. The winners will be announced on Oct. 29. View the production.

Pinkall is the director of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance and is a Grammy-winning soloist and chorister with the Kansas City Chorale. He has worked in production management for events such as the Emmy-winning 2014 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony in Sochi, Russia, the 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the World Meeting of Families Papal Mass in Philadelphia.
