Submitted by Sherry Fleming

Prescott Deininger

The Johnson Cancer Research Center is hosting the 2022 K-State Cancer Research Week Sept. 12-17.

On Thursday, Sept. 15, guests can attend two different Bascom Lectures.

At 4 p.m., Prescott Deininger, director of the Tulane Cancer Center, will present a scientific lecture, "Human Mobile Elements: Intrinsic genome instability," in Fiedler Auditorium, Room 1107. A short reception with cookies will follow the lecture.

At 7 p.m., Deininger will present a lecture for a general audience, "How Genetics, Viruses, and Sleep Change Your Cancer Risk," at Bluestem Bistro in Manhattan. Snacks will be served during the lecture.

Deininger is an expert in the molecular genetics of cancer. His work is highly influential for other cancer researchers and has been cited by them more than 20,000 times. His efforts to understand the role of mobile DNA in cancer initiation have resulted in millions of dollars in federal support and numerous prestigious awards. Most notable among these honors was the induction into the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an organization that consists of the country's most distinguished scientists and engineers.

The George S. Bascom Memorial Lecture/Workshop Series on Current Issues in Clinical Medicine started in 1996. It is named after a local physician and brings distinguished experts to K-State. The experts present to faculty, students, medical care providers and the public about challenges faced in clinical medicine and research.
