Technology buying recommendations
K-State encourages students to bring a computer to college. Computers are used for coursework, research, and communicating with instructors and other students.
K-State's Technology buying recommendations cover computers for college, departmental computers, tablets, and smartphones. These recommendations are the university's official guidelines for buying PCs and Macs. The recommendations are updated each spring.
Various licenses are available for departmental or personal use. Some fees and restrictions may apply. See K-State's Software Licenses page for more information.
Academic software discounts are available through the K-State Student Union Campus Store (785-532-6583, ) and other academic resellers. The computer store requires a valid K-State eID to obtain the discounts. Some businesses will require proof of enrollment in an academic institution and/or use of a valid .edu email address.
K-Staters connecting their computers to the K-State network can use the antivirus software of their choice or choose from the recommended software listed below:
- Windows 10, 8, 8.1 — Defender (built-in)
- Windows 7 — Security Essentials
- Mac — Sophos HomeFree

The Microsoft Office Suite can be installed on up to five PCs or Macs, and five mobile devices for personal use at no cost. There is also 1 TB of space available via OneDrive for Business. See the Office 365 Help and Support page for more information.
Microsoft Office and Microsoft Operating System licenses are available to faculty/staff for all university-owned computers at no cost. Check with the technical support staff in your unit for more information.
Computing labs software
The software in the Computing labs is free for K-Staters to use, both Windows and Mac computers are available.
ZOOM video conferencing
High-definition web-based video and audio conferencing service with screensharing. Go to ZOOM sign in page or the K-State Connect page, click Join or Start a Meeting and then sign in with your eID and password.
Limited, free laser printing
Limited, free laser printing is available to all students and faculty/staff. $10 is allocated per person each fall and spring semester, and $5 each summer. The system requires a K-State eID and password. Print cost is 10 cents per page or 18 cents for 2-page duplex. See the Service Locations page for more information.
Pay-for-printing (CatCash) is available when K-Staters add money to their Wildcat Cards. Students can also give access to parents for adding funds via the CatCash system. See the CatCash page for more information.
Wireless printing from a lab computer or personal laptop
In order to print wirelessly, users must be on campus and connected to the KSU Wireless or KSU Housing network. Wireless printing can be done from anywhere on campus to PaperCut print stations in several locations:
- Hale Library, 1st floor
- Justin Hall Lobby
- Weigel Library (Regnier Hall, room 0081)
- Math/Physics Library (Cardwell Hall, room 105)
