New Graduate Programs and Certificates
The Graduate School strongly suggests that faculty proposing a new graduate degree program or certificate meet with the Associate Dean of the Graduate School during the early stages of the proposal development, prior to submitting your proposal to the Graduate Council for approval. This meeting will help align the proposers with the required documents and procedures as well as to help identify any potential issues. This is especially important for interdisciplinary programs and certificates, as that process involves additional steps not outlined below.
Prior to submitting proposals to the Graduate School:
- Proposing Faculty meet with Dean of the Graduate School
- Department Curriculum review committee or proposing faculty develop proposal
- Department Curriculum committee votes
- Department faculty votes
- College curriculum committee votes
- College Faculty votes, notification sent to the College Dean's office
New Program and Certificate* Approval Process
- Proposal submitted to the Graduate School
- Graduate Council Assessment and Review Committee review and approval
- Graduate Council Academic Affairs Committee review and approval
- Graduate Council review and approval
- Faculty Senate Academic Affairs Committee review and approval
- Faculty Senate Executive Committee to schedule consideration by Faculty Senate
- Faculty Senate review and approval
- Provost prepares the memo to send to Board of Regents (BOR)
- Materials submitted to the BOR Council of Chief Academic Officers (COCAO), Note: New Program Proposals must be submitted 4 weeks prior to the next COCAO meeting for review and processing purposes.
- COCAO Reading One
- COCAO Reading Two if the vote from COCAO is unanimous, then it goes to COP the same day for a vote, if it is not unanimous it goes to COP the following month.
- BOR Council of Presidents (COP) vote
- Board of Regents (BOR) vote
*New Graduate Certificates are complete once they have been approved by Faculty Senate and the Provost has been notified.
