Examinations

Number of exams

There will be three written exams during the course of the semester (each worth 100 points), plus 3 out-of-class writing assignments (worth together 100 points).  Dates are indicated on the Course Schedule (Parts 1, 2, and 3).

Format of the exams

Each exam will consist of one or two longer essays, followed by a series of questions calling for short answers (2 or 3 sentences).  About a week before each exam, I will issue a "prep sheet" that will point you fairly specifically to the matters you can expect to encounter on the test. 

You will want to review the memo on criteria for evaluating examination answers.  What is said here applies both to short essays written in-class and to longer essays written out of class.  If something on this memo is not clear to you, consult the extended version; if you are still uncertain about what is meant by this or that criterion, be sure to ask for clarification in class, on the electronic discussion board, or over the listserv.

Two notes on the writing you do for this course

• What you write is your own property, but whatever you submit in response to the requirements of the course may be reproduced and distributed for discussion and/or reflection by other members of the class. Examination answers that I decide to use this way will not be identified with the person who submitted it, unless I am holding it up as an example particularly worthy of emulation.  The writing assignments due outside of examinations, however, will be shared in class and/or via our electronic discussion boards.

• Faculty Senate regulations require me to bring your attention the following statement:  "Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and may be punished by failure on the exam, paper or project; failure in the course; and/or expulsion from the university."  For more information, consult Appendix F of the Faculty Handbook, University Policy Regarding Academic Honesty and Plagiarism.  and the Undergraduate Honor System Policy passed by the Faculty Senate on April 14, 1998.
