English 220: Fiction into Film (Fall 2004)
Calculating the Course Grade
Here is the way points will be totaled up:
80 | 8 short writings (class discussion preps) on the fiction/film pairs, @ 10 points each |
20 | short essay on a significant point of contrast between "Heart of Darkness" and Apocalypse Now! |
75 | out-of-class essay (Analytic Essay #2) on a short-story/film pair ( "Soldier's Home," "I'm a Fool" or "Barn Burning") |
50 | 2 short in-class essays on The Color Purple (novel & film) |
75 | out-of-class essay (Analytic Essay #2) on a fiction/film pair ("The Jilting of Granny Weatherall") |

65 | contributions to discussion on the Message Boards (13 contributions @ 5 points each) |
75 | Final Exam: out-of-class essay |
50 | in-class portion of final exam |
550 | TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE (before adding extra-credit, if any) |
plus up to 10 extra-credit points for reports on designated campus lectures or films, @ 5 points each |
.Here is the way the course grade will be determined from your total points earned:
Percentage of Total Points Possible | Total Points Earned | Course Grade |
90-100% | 495 or above | A |
80-89.9% | 440-494.99... | B |
60-79.9% | 330-439.99... | C |
50-59.9% | 275-329.99... | D |
under 50% | below 275 | F |
Note: In calculating the percentages (left column), extra-credit points will be counted in the numerator (total points earned) but not the denominator (total points possible before extra-credit) in the division. | ||
Note: Students very close on the lower verge of a grade cut-off will be given a boost into the higher grade if their message board contributions are 5 or more greater than the 13 required for the course. |
