Saturday Afternoon (1:00pm - 7:00pm): Presentations and Interactions

  • NSF Program director (Dr. Jian Cao) presents NSF Guidelines for CAREER proposals
  • Four to five recent CAREER awardees present their stories and share their experiences
  • Questions and answers
  • Working dinner (The dinner will be of reception type. Participants can freely walk around to talk to others, asking more questions, sharing what they have learned, etc.)

Saturday Evening: Mock Proposal Review

  • Each participant will be given a package that a CAREER proposal reviewer will receive, including review guidance, review forms, and several proposals (including both successful and unsuccessful CAREER proposals previously submitted by CAREER awardees)
  • Participants review these proposals (giving ratings and comments)

Sunday Morning (8:00am - 12:00 noon): Mock Panel Review Meeting and Brainstorming

  • NSF Program director describes procedures for a typical CAREER proposal panel meeting
  • A mock panel review meeting will be held for those proposals that the participants read Saturday evening
  • Present and discuss the original reviewers’ comments and ratings on these proposals
  • In small groups of 4-5 people, list characteristics of successful CAREER proposals
  • As one big group, summarize these characteristics
