Learn how to advance your career before it starts

Submitted by Anne Bryant

Come listen and speak with Sam Mellinger, vice president of communications for the Kansas City Royals, and other professionals at a Job Ready panel session from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in K-State Student Union, Room 227.

David Levy, who teaches in the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication and is the director of the Collegian Media Group, organized the event. He says this is a special opportunity to learn how to take what you're learning in any academic discipline and apply basic journalism skills to propel your career forward.

"Everyone is invited to attend," Levy said.

The panel consists of four experts who work in law, communications, public relations and the specialty coffee industry.

"That's the point of the panel," Levy said. "None of the speakers are working in journalism, yet they have all used mass communication and journalism tools to boost their careers. We want to show students opportunities and platforms they might not be considering for getting their names and portfolios in front of seasoned professionals."

In addition to Mellinger, the panel will include Kristen Egger, associate attorney for Wise & Reber LC; Sheila Ellis-Glasper, founder and CEO of SEG Media Collective and founder and president of Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills; and Mark Crawford, director of sales, North America, for Eversys SA.

The event is free and open to all students.
