Microscope image recognized in international contest

Submitted by Division of Biology

Pair of ovaries filled with egg precursors (“egg chambers”) from an adult fruit fly.

Yujun Chen, postdoctoral associate in the Division of Biology, won 11th place in the 2019 Annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. This international competition, now in its 45th year, honors the best images taken through a microscope that blend science with art. This year, the top 20 photos were recognized from more than 2,000 submissions.

"This image shows the … beauty of how different stages of egg chambers are packed and developed," Chen told the contest judges.

Chen's winning image was of a pair of ovaries filled with egg precursors — "egg chambers" — an adult fruit fly. His fluorescent image, acquired on a confocal microscope, highlighted the many cells and muscle fibers that make up the ovary. Chen works in the lab of Jocelyn McDonald, associate professor in the Division of Biology, where they study how groups of cells move around to form and shape tissues during development.

More information about the competition and the top three winners is available on the Nikon Small World website.
