Call for submissions for 'What Were You Wearing?' survivor art exhibit

Submitted by Shanese McGregor

In recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education, or CARE, will host its second annual "What Were You Wearing?" survivor art exhibit.

The installation provides a tangible response to one of our culture's most pervasive rape myths: that victims are somehow to blame because of their clothing choices. The outfits featured are recreated from the real stories of survivors in the Manhattan area. Whether it's a ball gown or a pair of sweats, victims are never to blame.

CARE invites victim/survivors in the K-State community to share their own experiences with sexual violence as well as the clothing of what was worn when it happened. To submit, send an email to ksucare@k-state.edu and share just a few sentences or a few paragraphs — 1,000-word maximum. CARE is a confidential office and will respect your privacy by keeping your name confidential. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, April 4.

CARE advocates are available to meet with K-State students, faculty and staff members who have experienced sexual violence, dating or domestic violence, stalking, or sexual harassment. Advocates offer support and aid survivors in exploring their options.

For more information or to set up an appointment, call 785-532-6444 or email ksucare@k-state.edu
