President Myers commemorates WWI centennial with National Press Club event
The year 2018 marks the centennial of the end of World War I. This week, Kansas State University President Richard Myers joined with the National World War I Museum and Memorial and the National Press Club to commemorate the historic milestone.
Myers, a retired four-star U.S. Air Force general and the 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, participated in a panel discussion on Thursday, March 29, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
The National Press Club and the National World War I Museum and Memorial — which Congress has designated as America's official World War I museum and memorial — hosted the panel for national media to mark the final year of the centennial celebration of World War I. John Hughes, editor for Bloomberg News, served as the moderator.
Myers, museum leaders and best-selling authors discussed the lasting impressions of the Great War, which ended in 1918 after more than 16 million soldiers and civilians had died.
Other panelists included:
• Matthew Naylor, president and CEO of The National World War I Museum and Memorial.
• Margaret MacMillan, best-selling author and professor of history at the University of Toronto.
• Michael Neiberg, best-selling author and chair of war studies in the department of national security and strategy at the United States Army War College.
"It was an honor to serve on the panel with such distinguished leaders and authors," Myers said. "To be in our nation's capital to commemorate the end of World War I was a fitting way to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our country during the Great War. I was especially reminded of the 48 K-Staters who lost their lives in World War I."
