Professional ethics graduate elective offered fall 2012

Submitted by Olivia Blanco

Graduate students may wish to consider enrolling in the Professional Ethics elective, which will be offered on Wednesdays, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., in fall 2012. This elective has been well received by graduate students in the past.

Diane Swanson, professor of management in the College of Business Administration and the von Waaden professor of Business Administration, designed this seminar and has taught it for several years. She is an expert in business ethics and corporate social responsibility and is often quoted in the media. Because enrollment is capped at 18 graduate students, the classroom environment is interactive and accommodates to students' interests.

The topics covered in this elective may be of special interest to MBA and MAcc students, but students in other areas are welcome to enroll.

Topics covered include codes of ethics, including the AICPA code; fraud prevention; dimensions of white collar crime; personal and organizational ethics; stakeholder management; value-based leadership and organizational culture; the nature of bureaucracy; the role of regulatory agencies; voluntary standards, such as SA8000 and the Global Reporting Initiative; and compliance with legal standards, including Sarbanes Oxley and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations.

If you have any questions about this graduate elective, contact Swanson via email.
