Stokes named department head of civil engineering

Submitted by Mary Rankin

Robert Stokes, professor of civil engineering and director of the University Transportation Center, has been named department head of civil engineering, effective March 1. He had been serving as interim head of the department since spring 2013.

"I strongly endorse and welcome the appointment of Dr. Stokes to this position," said Darren Dawson, dean of the College of Engineering. "His credentials and experience prior to and during his interim service more than proved his qualifications. Following the search and interview process, I am confident in our choice."

Joining the K-State faculty in 1991 as an associate professor, Stokes was promoted to full professor in 1999 and appointed director of the transportation center in 2008.

His research focuses on urban, rural and intercity transportation planning; highway design, planning and operations; traffic engineering; design and operation of turning lanes; traffic safety; and transit planning, design and operations.

Stokes earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Antioch College, master's degrees in both civil engineering and community and regional planning from Ohio State University, and a doctorate in urban and regional science from Texas A&M University.
