K-State Band High School Leadership Camp

Submitted by Don Linn

The K-State Band will be finishing its annual Leadership and Auxiliary Camp today. The camp will conclude with a performance at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Each student group will get a chance to perform and demonstrate what he or she learned in the couple of days spent under the instruction of K-State band staff, alumni, graduate assistants, drum majors, band leaders and Kansas music educators.

This past week, 127 high school drum majors, section leaders, percussionists and color guard members from all across Kansas and beyond came to the K-State campus to learn band conducting, leadership skills, guard technique and percussion technique.

The students at Leadership and Auxiliary Camp participate in a number of large and small group activities that help strengthen their leadership skills, teamwork, positive attitudes and work ethic. The camp is process-driven with the goal that each student would come away with the knowledge and confidence necessary to become leaders within his or her own band programs.

The camp is open to all students currently in ninth through 12th grades. They represent some of the finest high school student band leadership in Kansas and the surrounding states.
