National Safety Month, week two: Employee wellness

We hope your National Safety Month is off to a great start. The theme this week is employee wellness.

In 2011, one out of five Americans reported visiting an emergency department at least once in the previous year, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Health, United States, 2012 report provides an overview of the country's health based on state and federal data.

According to center, falls were the most common reason for an injury-related trip to an emergency department. However, findings show there are many other health related concerns:

  • In 2010, 24 percent of all deaths were caused by heart disease, while 23 percent were caused by cancer.
  • In 2011, 48 percent of adults did not meet 2008 federal physical activity guidelines.
  • 19 percent of adults reported being cigarette smokers in 2011.
  • Obesity among adults 20 and older increased to 20 percent — up from 14 percent during the periods 1988-1994 and 2007-2010.

We all know a healthier employee is a happier, more productive employee. Making healthier decisions can be difficult but with the help of those around you these decisions can become easier and turn into daily habits. Heading into Employee Wellness week, here is some helpful information you can share to get everyone engaged with safety.

Daily tips

  • June 10: Scheduling time in your calendar for physical activity will make you more inclined to stick to it.
  • June 11: Opt for healthy substitutes in combo meals, such as a side salad or baked potato instead of fries or onion rings.
  • June 12: If possible, use the same pharmacy for all your prescriptions. The pharmacist may catch incompatible drug combinations.
  • June 13: Properly disposing medications will help protect the environment as well as pets, children and anyone who might find medication in your trash.
  • June 14: A healthy breakfast is important for everyone. Instant oatmeal is a quick and healthy option; toss in fruit, raisins or nuts to add extra nutrients.
