Professional development opportunities for graduate faculty and advisors

The Graduate School is partnering with the Office of Student Success and the Teaching and Learning Center to provide professional development opportunities for graduate faculty and advisors on Jan. 9 and 13. 

On Jan. 9, the Graduate School will present two workshops as part of the K-State/NACADA Academic Advising Winter Institute:

  • "Graduate Advisor Resources and Tools to Drive Graduate Student Success," presented by Megan Miller and Michael Young, 2:30-3:20 p.m., 126 Leadership Studies Building. 
  • "Understanding Cultural Differences when Building Relationships and Expectations for Grad Students," presented by Marcellus Caldas, 3:30-4:15 p.m., 126 Leadership Studies Building.

On Jan. 13, in partnership with the Teaching and Learning Center, the Graduate School will offer "The Highs and Lows of the Faculty Life: Lessons from Experience." This professional development seminar will be comprised of two panel sessions, during which the panelists will share experiences, offer recommendations and answer questions. Don Saucier, faculty associate director of the Teaching and Learning Center, will serve as moderator for the panels.

Both sessions will be held in the Cottonwood Room at the K-State Student Union.

Session 1 — 9-10:30 a.m.
"How to Get Started (and Stay Productive) in Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities, and Design (RSCAD) at K-State"

Panelists:

  • Heather Bailey, associate professor of psychological sciences, College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Jason Bergtold, professor of agricultural economics, College of Agriculture.
  • Traci Brimhall, professor of English, College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Erika Geisbrecht, professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Prathap Parameswaran, professor and graduate program director of civil engineering, Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.

Session 2 — 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
"How to Resolve Conflict and Navigate Department/College/University Politics"

Panelists:

  • Hans Coetzee, university distinguished professor and head of anatomy and physiology, College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Tanda Kidd, professor and head of food nutrition, dietetics and health, College of Health and Human Sciences.
  • Mary Kohn, professor of English and director of the Chapman Center for Rural Studies, College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Martin Seay, professor and head of personal financial planning, College of Health and Human Sciences.
  • Karin Westman, professor and head of English, College of Arts and Sciences.
