Seek research magazine named finalist for prestigious publishing award

Submitted by Office of the Vice President for Research and the Division of Communications and Marketing

Spring 2022 Seek magazine

Kansas State University's flagship research magazine, Seek, continues to receive national recognition for excellence in the publishing industry.

The spring 2022 issue of Seek has been selected as a finalist in the Folio: Eddie & Ozzie Awards. The magazine is being recognized in the Ozzie Award category for single magazine issue design by an alumni or university organization. The awards honor cut-above-the-rest examples of design excellence.

"I could not be more proud of the research and the researchers featured in Seek, and of the publication that is produced to highlight their work," said David Rosowsky, vice president for research. "The collaborative team of writers, designers, photographers and others that contribute to this publication are leading the way in science communication."

Seek is published twice a year and is a collaboration among the Office of the Vice President for Research, the Division of Communications and Marketing and other university communicators. A 16-member in-house team — including designers, photographers and writers — created the spring 2022 issue of Seek magazine.

The spring issue of the magazine focused on K-State research in timely and relevant areas. The cover story focused on sustainability research ranging from agriculture to battery efficiency and sustainable fabrics. Other topics covered in the issue included analyzing the changing economy, fighting cancer with interdisciplinary research, describing rural research and community collaboration and exploring how cybersecurity research keeps our data, our infrastructure and our world safe.

The spring 2022 issue impressively reached more than 230,000 people — including print subscribers, website visitors, social media users and other content participants — just one month after publication.

"Our creative team members work across disciplines to share the stories of K-State research with people across our state, nation and world," said Ashley Martin, interim vice president of communications and marketing. "I am thrilled to see this prestigious external recognition for K-State's flagship research magazine, and we appreciate our university partners who make this collaborative publication possible."

The Eddie & Ozzie Awards program celebrates excellence in editorial and design in the publishing industry. More than 1,300 entries were received across nearly 170 categories for the 2022 program. Finalists represent the highest scoring entries per category, adjudicated by qualified editorial and design professionals. See the full list of finalists.

Winners will be announced at the Awards Gala on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the City Winery in New York City.

Entries are judged by an independent panel of media executives, as well as by the Eddie & Ozzie staff. Entries are evaluated based on creativity and innovation, with the most important criterion being proven success in aligning the brand’s mission with the end product.

"The Eddie & Ozzie Awards place the spotlight on leading editorial and design talents for their exceptional work," said Bill Amstutz, publisher of Folio. "They are creators of the most thoughtful, in-depth and engaging content that breaks through the noise and their communities are highly engaged. The Eddie & Ozzie Awards is a celebration of their exceptional talent and often inspire innovation in media."
