Travel consults offered at Lafene Health Center

Submitted by Shawn Funk

Travel consults are available at Lafene Health Center to assist students, faculty or staff who are traveling beyond the borders of the United States.

The consultation includes:

  • Individual review of vaccination requirements for the region being visited.
  • Travel recommendations for the region based on current health and safety precautions.
  • Worksheet completion listing requirements and recommendations.
  • Referral to a physician for any medications, health assessment, or needed instruction.
  • Vaccinations are available and may be initiated at the time of the initial consult.

Information about health risks and suggested preventative measures is based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of State. Among the issues that can be covered are political issues, road and travel conditions, and terrorism-related problems.

The consult will help ensure that any vaccinations, anti-malaria treatment — if indicated — or medications are received enough in advance to provide adequate protection by departure date.

Appointments for travel consults should be scheduled two to three months in advance of the desired travel date because some vaccination requirements may take several months to be completed. There is no charge for travel clinic consultation for enrolled students, although there will be charges for received vaccinations and purchased medications. Effective Aug. 15, non-students will be charged $99 for a travel consult. Appointments can be scheduled through the myLAFENE+ patient portal or by calling 785-532-6544.
