Art professor receives national award

Submitted by Tyler Sharp

Kevin Bernstein, assistant professor of art, was recognized with an award at the 54th Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, June 26-July 14, in Chautauqua, N.Y.

Bernstein received the Ellie Wilder Award from juror Jim Kempner, a New York gallery owner, at the exhibition's opening reception June 26. Kempner's gallery is in the Chelsea art district in New York.

Bernstein's colorful acrylic, "Crustose," shows vivid formations that lichens make up on surfaces, a sort of biomorphic calico. His work was a part of the annual exhibition of approximately 25 pieces from contemporary painters, sculptors, photographers and ceramicists. The show offers a unique representation of two- and three-dimensional pieces from artists across the United States and abroad.

The exhibition was established in 1958 and has featured many highly respected artists, gallery directors, critics and museum directors as jurors.
