Mechanical and nuclear engineering department hosts international conference

Submitted by Tyler Sharp

More than 90 international scientists from more than 25 countries joined the K-State department of mechanical and nuclear engineering recently for the eighth International Topical Meeting on Industrial Radiation and Radioisotope Measurement Applications.

The session opened with a welcome from Kirk Schulz, K-State president, and John English, dean of the College of Engineering. William Dunn, associate professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, was the general chair for the session, based in Kansas City. Ken Shultis, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, chaired the K-State session. Prior to the meeting, Douglas McGregor, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, gave a highly successful workshop on detection of ionizing radiation. The conference and workshop have led to several invitations for international collaborations with K-State.

Other activities for the attendees included tours of the Konza Prairie, the K-State TRIGA research reactor and the Semiconductor Materials and Radiological Technologies  -- or SMART -- laboratory.

The next Industrial Radiation and Radioisotope Measurement Applications conference will be in Valencia, Spain.
