Legislative Update

Submitted by Sue Peterson

Last week, the Legislature was focused on Gov. Laura Kelly’s State of the State speech to a joint session of the Kansas Legislature on Jan. 11.

Following the governor’s speech, Speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives Ron Ryckman delivered the Republican response.

On Wednesday, Jan. 12, the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Ways and Means Committee met in a joint meeting. The governor's budget director delivered the budget details for fiscal years 2022, 2023 and years beyond.

Blake Flanders, president and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, testified on Public Higher Education by the Numbers before the Kansas Senate Education Committee on Thursday, Jan. 13.

This week, the Senate Committee on Assessment and Taxation will start hearings on the governor’s proposal to eliminate the state sales tax on food.

The Kansas Legislature will provide virtual access to committee meetings and floor action throughout the 2022 legislative session. Links to access the meetings can be found at kslegislature.org/li.
