Goins publishes part III on Memphis soul music

Submitted by Wayne Goins

Goins profile

Wayne Goins, university distinguished professor of music, published "Clint Eastwood to Booker T. & the M.G.'s: Hang 'Em High" in the November 2021 issue of PMA, The Power of Music and Audio, a premier online journal that focuses on the human experience and interaction with recorded music and audio.

In the third and final installment of a three-part series, Goins investigates the music of the soul/R&B quartet whose instrumental style defined what widely became known as the "Memphis Sound." More specifically, Goins details two newly released collections: "Booker T. & the MG.'s: The Complete Stax Singles," issued as two separate double-vinyl colored albums covering 1962-67 and 1968-74, respectively. The albums were released by Real Gone Music, and the comprehensive collection includes such highlights as "Hang Em High," "Time Is Tight" and "Soul Limbo," which were tunes that Goins grew up listening to as a Chicagoan.

Goins, who serves as a regular contributing writer to the magazine, regularly combines intense music research with in-depth details of his use of mono, stereo, and high-end digital equipment for playback of his extensive music collection in 45s, LPs and CD format.
