USDA scientist to demo soil app at brownbag seminar

Submitted by Andra Williams

Jeff Herrick uses the LandPKS app on his phone.

Jeff Herrick, soil scientist for the USDA Agricultural Research Service, will be the featured speaker at a USDA Brownbag Seminar at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in 137 Waters Hall.

Herrick will share information about the LandPKS app, a simple tool for planning, monitoring and recordkeeping for ranchers, extension professionals and scientists.

The seminar will be presented by the Sustainable Opportunities for Improving Livelihoods with Soils, or SOILS, Consortium, the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Sustainable Intensification, or SIIL, and the K-State Department of Agronomy.

LandPKS is an app that collects basic soil and vegetation cover information with automated data storage, backup, access and simple soil texture determination — with no training needed.
