STEM Institute enrollment open for area students in grades 5-8

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Summer will be here very soon, and it's time to enroll in the fun, learning-centered STEM Institute for area students in grades 5-8. Enrollment closes April 4.

A partnership between USD 383 and the K-State College of Education, the institute began in 2011 and attracts approximately 300 kids per year. It runs Monday-Thursday each week in June and participants can learn about one topic per week. Please note there are different online enrollment forms based on the child's grade level — one form for grades 5-6 and one form for grades 7-8

Lori Godson, STEM Institute coordinator and assistant professor in the College of Education, said there are about a dozen sessions to choose from at each level. A few of the highlights for grades 5-6 are Music Using Stem is Cool, or M.U.S.I.C., Maker Space, Thinking Through Games, CSI: Uncovering the Truth and Robotics 1 and 2. Highlights for grades 7-8 are $6M Dollar Hand, Agent AI, Food for Thought, Thinking Through Games and Robotics.

"This is a great opportunity for students to not only enjoy hands-on STEM-related activities, but to also experience the K-State campus through four weeks of fun," Goodson said. "The teachers, as well as the parents, are always excited to see their students exploring these topics and possibly finding a future career along the way. June is always my favorite month of the year — you can't help but enjoy the environment and the learning that is taking place."
