The geography department at Kansas State University hosted the 2018 annual meeting of the Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Division of the American Association of Geographers Oct. 5-6.

Nearly 150 active geographers and spatial scientists — including faculty, practitioners, and students from the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming — were in attendance and presented papers and posters about basic and applied research in the human, physical, and geospatial subfields of geography.

During the conference, several geography undergraduate and graduate students were recognized for excellence in research:

  • Jakob Hanschu, first place, undergraduate paper.
  • Ricardo Gonzalez, second place, undergraduate poster.
  • Abbey Marcotte, second place, graduate poster.
  • Barrie Chileen, second place, graduate paper.
  • Rebecca Lima Albuquerque Maranhão, third place, graduate paper.

The meeting also featured keynote presentations by Tim Keane, professor of landscape architecture and regional & community planning, and David Kaplan, American Association of Geographers vice president and professor of geography at Kent State University.

Conference attendees also participated in field trips or a workshop led by geography faculty members Kendra McLauchlan, Konza Prairie Biological Station and the Flint Hills; Jeff Smith, Chasing Geography and history along the Kaw River Valley; and Shawn Hutchinson, Introduction to R for Visualization.

Arnaud Temme, associate professor of geography and Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Division of the American Association chair, and K-State's Beta Psi chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon organized the event.
