Regents considering three proposal requests from K-State

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

The Kansas Board of Regents has started development of its fiscal year 2014 appropriation request. To address systemwide needs, the board will include several components that will likely include requests for additional operating grant funds and deferred maintenance funds. Additionally, the board asked each public university and sector to submit targeted requests.

Kansas State University submitted three such requests.

K-State's first request is for $5 million annually to expand agricultural research by enhancing the Great Plains Sorghum Improvement and Utilization Center, Wheat Genetic and Genomic Resources Center and the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources. The state's agricultural economy is anticipated to benefit as a result.

The second request is for $5 million annually to further strengthen the education and research programs in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design. The college, which has design programs nationally ranked in the top 10, would help meet the current and future demand for design students.

The third request is for $5 million annually to foster discoveries and new research fields at K-State by creating an interdisciplinary research building as well as continuously investing in research infrastructure.

Regents members will discuss the requests through August, with a decision to follow in September. Approved requests by the regents will be submitted to the governor's office for consideration in the 2014 fiscal budget.
