Writing Center workshops, retreats and class visits for fall 2017

Submitted by Cydney Alexis

The Writing Center is open for the fall semester. Please encourage all of your students to utilize this free service.

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for one hour per week of free tutoring from a trained writing consultant. We tutor writing in all disciplines and genres, including honors projects, presentations, posters, lab reports and dissertations. Students can come to the center to brainstorm, get help with understanding an assignment, or to talk through a piece of writing. Tutoring appointments are available in the Writing Center, 122D English/Counseling Services Building, at various satellite locations such as Hale Library or Radina's in Aggieville, and online. Students can sign up for appointments online.

Workshops: The Writing Center also will host three workshops for undergraduates this term: "Interpreting Assignments and Assignment Sheets," Sept. 12; "Professional Correspondence," Oct. 3; and "Designing Effective PowerPoints," Nov. 7. It's easy to register at k-state.edu/english/writingcenter/workshops.html

Postdoctoral researcher and junior faculty writing retreats: Postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty are invited to participate in a three-part retreat from 12:30-3 p.m. Sept. 15, Oct. 13 and Nov. 17. On the first day, participants will write together for two hours and develop a plan for the other two retreats, with Writing Center staff. Besides writing as a group, participants can indicate interest in receiving writing mentoring and instruction from center staff. Light refreshments will be served. To register, please take a Qualtrics survey.

Outreach to faculty and staff courses and organizations: If you'd like Writing Center staff to come to your class or organization to briefly discuss services in a 5-minute presentation, or if you'd like to collaborate on a longer outreach session for your class, please fill out an outreach request form.

Help us hire students: Do you know an undergraduate student who is a strong writer and/or communicator? We hire undergraduate students in all disciplines and seek students with unique perspectives and team player attitudes. Interested students must take English 500, Writing Center Theory and Practice, which is available every fall. Contact Cydney Alexis at calexis@k-state.edu for more information.
