Management Information Systems Club visits Epiq Software, Lexmark

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Management Information Systems Club went to Kansas City on its fall field trip. Fifteen club members visited two software companies looking to hire management information systems students.

The first was Epiq Systems, a leading global provider of integrated technology solutions for the legal profession.  Epiq is seeing sustained growth and has begun actively recruiting management information systems students on the K-State campus. After a tour of the facilities, the students were provided information about how the company creates software solutions that help attorneys and their law offices search and keep track of cases and their outcomes so that lawyers can quickly find and reference any legal issues to support their current case load. Of interest to most students were the job descriptions of positions within the company that linked technology with the operations of a law office.

The second company was Lexmark, a worldwide provider of printing and imaging products, software and solutions and services dealing with document handling, storage and control. Lexmark purchased Perceptive Software in 2011, a Kansas-based company that had been actively recruiting K-State management information systems students for many years. Lexmark moved the location from its Shawnee offices to Kansas City, Kansas, into a new building designed for maximum productivity, employee comfort and improved customer relations. 

Many of the Lexmark employees with whom the club met were Kansas State alumni. These employees discussed the company in general, provided information on the company and its philosophy and corporate culture, described their own positions within the company and gave insight to the career progression that new hires could expect.

The trip was sponsored by the Professional Advantage program, a program offered by the College of Business Administration to help give its students a competitive edge upon graduation. The Management Information Systems Club schedules about two field trips each year to allow its club members the opportunity to network with business professionals and promote friendships among club members. The club reserved three vans from the motor pool and drove from the campus to the companies’ locations in Kansas City and returned to campus later that day. These field trips provide valuable insight for Management Information Systems Club members and a useful connection to employers and business professionals.
