Hiller Connell publishes chapter in sustainable apparel production book

Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

Kim Hiller Connell, associate professor in the apparel, textiles, and interior design department, College of Human Ecology, wrote a chapter in Handbook of Sustainable Apparel Production published recently by CRC Press in New York.

The book editor, S. S. Muthu, invited Hiller Connell to write "Environmental impacts of apparel production, distribution, and consumption: An overview."

The chapter outlines the environmental impacts of the textiles and apparel supply chain and considers impacts associated with production, distribution and consumption.

The associate professor writes about the broad environmental issues that crosscut all stages within the supply chain, including the high-energy demand of the industry, the depletion of nonrenewable fossil fuel resources, and the industry's significant greenhouse gas emissions.

Then, progressing through the supply chain from fiber, yarn, textile, and apparel production through to end-of-life and disposal, she details the environmental impacts unique to each stage.
