ADVANCE Distinguished Lecture Series presents Stephen Michielsen

Submitted by Tawny Ochs

The ADVANCE Distinguished Lecture Series and Jooyoun Kim, assistant professor in the department of apparel, textiles, and interior design, will host Stephen Michielsen at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, in 127 Leadership Studies Building. Michielsen will present "Wetting and Wicking in Textiles: Comfort, Protection and Forensics."

In most apparel, wicking of body moisture plays a critical role in its comfort. In protective textiles, wetting and wicking often determines whether the textile can be used or not. In forensics, the wetting and wicking of liquids into textiles results in stains that can be used to solve a criminal case. Although these three areas seem far removed from each other, wetting and wicking link them together intimately.

In this presentation, the wetting and wicking of liquids into textiles will be discussed from the point of view of the textile structures with specific cases taken from all three examples above.
