National Academic Advising Association to host annual conference in Denver

The National Academic Advising Association will host its 35th annual conference, “Advising with Altitude,” Oct. 2-5 in Denver.

The National Academic Advising Association is an international academic advising professional association with more than 10,000 members. The association is based at K-State and promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.

Special recognition will be given to the association’s annual award winners – individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the enhancement of academic advising. Provost and Senior Vice President April Mason and College of Education Dean Michael Holen will recognize recent graduates of the National Academic Advising Assoication-Kansas State University graduate certificate in academic advising and master’s of science in academic advising programs.  

Presenters from K-State and the National Academic Advising Association include:

Kenneth Hughey, professor and department chair of special education, counseling and student affairs and Dan Wilcox, assistant professor of special education, counseling and student affairs: “Striving for Excellence in Career Advising: A Case Study Approach.”

Judith Hughey, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs and Robert Pettay, instructor of kinesiology: “A Mountain to Climb: Probationary Students and Motivational Interviewing.”

Beth Shanholtzer, adviser in the School of Family Studies and Human Services: “Over Mountains and Seas: Helping Students Gain the Most from an International Program.”

Marsha Miller, assistant director of resources and services for the National Academic Advising Association: “Writing for NACADA: The NACADA Journal, Academic Advising Today, the Clearinghouse and Monograph.

Leigh Cunningham, coordinator of education programming for the National Academic Advising Association and Miller: “NACADA Resources: Taking Professional Development to New Heights.”

Michele Holaday, marketing program assistant for the National Academic Advising Association:  “NACADA Gets Social: How NACADA Members Can Connect with Social Media.”

Jenifer Scheibler, National Academic Advising Association and National Collegiate Athletic Association program assistant: “NCAA Academic Reform and the NACADA/NCAA Partnership.
