Physics undergraduates selected for College of Arts & Sciences Research Awards

Submitted by Kim Coy

Several physics undergraduate majors were recipients of College of Arts & Sciences Research Awards in 2014 and 2015. The students work closely with physics faculty to hone their research interests and make a contribution to the field of study. They also are able to network with researchers at conferences to present their findings.

The recipients spend at least 100 hours working on their projects and receive a scholarship of $1,000 as part of this award from the college.

The physics department extends the college funding for another 100 hours of research time for each of these students made possible due to the generosity of the physics department's friends and alumni.

The students chosen for spring 2015 from the physics department and their faculty mentors are Brendan Heffernan, senior from Olathe, mentored by Christopher Sorensen; Stephen Houston, senior from Tribune, mentored by Bharat Ratra; Ben LeValley, senior from Salina, mentored by Brian Washburn; Ryan Luder, senior from Overland Park, mentored by Kristan Corwin; Joshua Nelson, junior from Salina, mentored by Carlos Trallero; Levi Riley, senior from Manhattan, mentored by Brett DePaola; Edward Schenk IV, senior from Junction City, and John Thompson, junior from Salina, mentored by Eleanor Sayre.

Recipients in 2014 included Mattithyah Tillotson, senior from Valley Center, mentored by Kristan Corwin; Kyle Bayliff, senior from Maize, and Brendan Heffernan, senior from Olathe, mentored by Christopher Sorensen; Stephen Houston, senior from Tribune, mentored by Bharat Ratra; Jordan Nesley, senior from Wichita, mentored by Kristan Corwin; Brandin Davis, junior from Derby, Aaron Morgan, junior from Manhattan, and Jeremy Pogue, junior from Wichita, mentored by Robert Szoszkiewicz; and Daniel Phillips, senior, mentored on a collaborative project between Amit Chakrabarti in physics and Laura Donnelly in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
