Entomologists publish on control of important stored product pests

Submitted by David Margolies

Kun Yan Zhu, professor of entomology; April Sutton, former entomology master's student; Leigh Murray, professor of statistics; and Frank Arthur and Jim Campbell from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Center for Grain and Animal Health Research, published an article in Journal of Stored Products Research, "Residual efficacy of synergized pyrethrin + methoprere aerosol against larvae of Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum."

Tribolium beetles are cosmopolitan pests of stored grains, cereal products, and fruit and nut products and infest structures, including mills, food warehouses, retail stores and urban homes. They cause economic damage, including direct contamination and costs associated with treatment and monitoring, rejection and return of contaminated products, and loss of consumer goodwill. This research identified promising treatments for control of these pests.
