Cinema italiano presents 'Divorzio all'italiano'

Submitted by Christopher Renner

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Cinema italiano will present the classic film "Divorzio all'italiana" at 7 p.m. in 008 Eisenhower Hall. The film is open to the public.

This 1961 Italian comedy film was directed by Pietro Germi. The screenplay was written by Ennio De Concini, Pietro Germi, Alfredo Giannetti and Agenore Incrocci. The film is based on the novel "Un delitto d'onore." or Crime of Honor, by Giovanni Arpino. The film will be shown in Italian with Italian subtitles.

Film summary: Ferdinando Cefalù (Marcello Mastroianni), an impoverished Sicilian nobleman, is married to Rosalia (Daniela Rocca), an unattractive but devoted wife. However, he is in love with his cousin Angela (Stefania Sandrelli), a very much younger and attractive woman whom he sees only during the summers because her family sends her away to the city to a nunnery to receive her education. Since divorce is illegal, the film centers on Ferdinando's attempts do away with his wife while respecting the Sicilian Honor Codes that dictate that a man can only kill his wife if he finds her in the arms of another man...but Rosalia is devoted only to him. What's he to do?

Cultural note: Divorce was legalized in Italy only in 1970 and confirmed in a popular referendum in 1974. In fact, the waiting period between the request for legal separation and the request for divorce, originally five years was reduced to three only in 1987.
