Description of Competency


Pathogens/pathogenic mechanisms

Evaluate modes of disease causation of infectious agents.


Host response to pathogens/immunology

Investigate the host immune response to infection.


Environmental/ecological influences

Examine the influence of environmental and ecological forces on infectious diseases.


Disease surveillance

Analyze disease risk factors and select appropriate surveillance.


Disease vectors

Investigate the role of vectors, toxic plants and other toxins in infectious diseases.

The curriculum prepares professionals to strengthen zoonoses prevention and control programs, investigate emerging infectious diseases, enhance the public’s ability to respond to bioterrorism and biosecurity emergencies, and coordinate rapid response activities among government, agriculture industries, nonprofit organizations, and academia.

“Core” requirements (15 hours) 
Each student in the MPH Program must complete these required public health core courses:

  • Biostatistics: MPH 701 Fundamental Methods of Biostatistics (3 hrs)
  • Environmental health sciences: MPH 802 Environmental Health (3 hrs)
  • Epidemiology: MPH 754 Introduction to Epidemiology (3 hrs) 
  • Health services administration:MPH 720 Administration of Health Care Organizations (3 hrs)
  • Social and behavioral sciences: MPH 818 Social and Behavioral Bases of Public Health (3 hrs)
