Jana Thomas has spent nearly 20 years in marketing, advertising, and communications, working in dynamic, fast-paced industries while creating integrated brand strategies for large brands such as DIRECTV, Geek Squad, Penske, FASTSIGNS International, and Cinergy Entertainment. Over half of her industry career has been focused on digital media, in areas such as local search management, search engine and mobile marketing, and paid and organic social media. She also owns a social media consulting company, specializing in film, family entertainment, and esports.

In 2021, Jana launched the Social Media Citizenship Project, a non-profit dedicated to helping educators better understand student social media communication behaviors in order to create applicable strategies for maximizing positive social media use.

In the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication, Jana is the Assistant Director of the Advertising & Public Relations degree and teaches courses in social media strategy, social media management, content creation, digital advertising, campaign development, and media audiences.

Jana earned her Master’s of Science in Strategic Communications from Kansas State University and is currently working on her doctorate in Leadership Communication. She conducts research in the areas of adolescent media use, digital citizenship, and social media manager well-being.
