Alcohol and Academics

The relationship between alcohol consumption and academic performance is a concern for students, faculty, staff, and parents. Alcohol consumption has been negatively associated with academic performance, ranging from missing class, falling behind in class, doing poorly on exams or papers, and receiving lower grades overall. Risky drinking has been proposed as a probable contributor to student attrition from college. Most students are unaware that there can be cognitive deficits up to 48 hours after a night of drinking. In addition, alcohol disrupts sleep, which interferes with long-term memory formation.
