Pneumonia Alert
Kansas State University and Lafene Health Center are monitoring the trajectory in cases of pediatric pneumonia reported in China, Ohio, and Massachusetts. These cases are being referred to as “white lung syndrome” to describe the appearance of infected lungs when viewed on an X-ray. Experts have stated that the cases are due to existing respiratory pathogens such as influenza virus, RSV, COVID-19, and the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, rather than a novel pathogen.
Members of the campus community should familiarize themselves with symptoms, monitor their health, and avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals. Flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and cough are common and may progress to pneumonia in at-risk individuals, particularly infants, children, older adults, and those with immunocompromising conditions. All Kansas State University community members are encouraged to practice hand hygiene, sneeze into one’s elbow, and stay home when ill.
Lafene Health Center staff are happy to care for students with symptoms. Please call 785-532-6544 OR visit myLAFENE+ portal to schedule an appointment.
