Art and Math Seminar presentation May 4: 'Can you build a Turing machine out of Lego bricks?'

Submitted by Natalia Rozhkovskaya

The online Art and Math Seminar will have a presentation from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, May 4, via Zoom discussing the visualization of Turing machine calculation with the help of Lego bricks. Registration is required to attend.

Aurélien Alvarez, professor of mathematics at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, France, will present "Can you build a Turing machine out of Lego bricks?"

Alvarez is the editor-in-chief of the online French review Images des Maths and a co-author of celebrated mathematical films "Dimensions" and "Chaos." He is actively involved in the continuing education of primary and secondary school teachers and participates in numerous mediation activities, particularly at the Maison of Mathematics and Computer Science in Lyon. Alvarez's scientific research concerns the theory of dynamical systems, in particular through the study of the topology and geometry of certain algebraic differential equations.

The Art and Math Seminar is hosted by the mathematics department. The complete seminar schedule and more details on the talks can be found on the seminar website
