Mandelbrot set

On Feb. 24, Diogo Pereira Henriques will speak at the Art and Math Seminar from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Registration is required to participate in the seminar.

Pereira Henriques is a researcher in the fields of urbanism, architecture, design, software and higher education, holding a postdoc position at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University in Denmark. Since 2019, he has been a member of the editorial board, as social media editor, of the highly influential Nexus Network Journal, dedicated to relations between math and architecture and published by Birkhäuser/Springer.

The talk will present influences of artistic creativity in the field of mathematics. Following a historical and critical approach, the speaker will discuss several personalities in the history of European arts and mathematics, widely known not only in the fields of arts and mathematics but also in other fields and popular culture. In his talk, Pereira Henriques plans to address important questions: Why have certain works from Ada Lovelace, M.C. Escher and Benoit Mandelbrot become part of our collectively shared imagination? Can we develop creativity and mathematics as a common language across different cultures and scientific disciplines? Can art and science collaborations be a key to solving the complex societal and climate crisis facing humanity in the 21st century?

The online Art and Math Seminar, organized by the mathematics department, is dedicated to visual creativity inspired by mathematical sciences. View the complete seminar schedule and registration form.
