Dyslexia 101 CPSI Virtual Speaker Series

Submitted by Sarah Harper

On Sept. 21, the Council for Public School Improvement, or CPSI, starts with its first speaker, Devin Kearns, in its 2021-2022 virtual conference series.

The morning session will start at 9 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m., followed by an afternoon session starting at 1 p.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m. Kearns will discuss dyslexia, how to best support students who struggle with it, how to help teachers help students, along with and other strategies, all to aid students who struggle with reading.

Dyslexia is a common condition that makes it hard to read but has nothing to do with intelligence or vision. It is simply the way the brain functions differently than others. The goal of this first speaker series is to target the stigma surrounding dyslexia and bring to the table better ways to help those who struggle with it. Dyslexia 101 is about providing resources and knowledge for teachers to improve and manage this challenge.

Kearns has much experience as an educator, professional development provider and curriculum developer. His experience as a teacher, literacy coach and reading specialist makes him uniquely qualified to speak on this topic and discuss ways to overcome this challenge. Not only will he provide well-researched knowledge but also practical strategies from his own experience that will aid in this discussion.

Don't miss out on the virtual speaker series hosted by CPSI. K-8 educators are encouraged to attended Dyslexia 101 as Kearns will discuss information to increase capacities to determine six possible causes of reading difficulties, strategies to support students with dyslexia, and instructional interventions to impact students.
