The Graduate School invites you to a celebratory Graduate School Know How session! We will be providing coffee and cookies to celebrate the end of another successful Fall semester.

The Graduate School has partnered with the Teaching and Learning Center to invite the Graduate Faculty Community to participate in a series of professional development panels.

The purpose of these panels will be to discuss how to get started (and stay productive) in research, scholarly and creative activities, and design (RSCAD) at K-State; how to resolve conflict; and how to navigate department/college/university politics.

“The Highs and Lows of the Faculty Life: Lessons from Experience”

Date: Friday, January 13th, 2023

The Graduate School’s webinar series continued December 7th with 294 registered and 71 in attendance.

The next Graduate School Webinar is Wednesday, December 21st at 6 pm titled Funding Opportunities, in which we will be walking students through the application process.

The Graduate School is accepting nominations for Timothy R. Donoghue Graduate Scholarships. The nomination deadline is January 31, 2023.

Funding information: Master's students are awarded a $3,000 scholarship, and doctoral students are awarded a $5,000 scholarship for one academic year. The scholarship may be renewed for a second year.

Nomination guidelines and procedures:

  • Nominees must be beginning a K-State graduate program in Fall 2023 and be offered an assistantship.
  • Nominees may be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or international students.
  • Limited funding is available to support up to 20 doctoral and up to 10 masters admitted for Fall 2023.
  • Each graduate program may submit four
  • Nominations are due January 31, 2023. Selected students will be notified by February 17.

The Graduate School kicks off the welcome and orientation activities on December 15, 2022 with a “Getting Ready” Zoom session at 9:00am CST. Below are dates for sessions scheduled in December and January.

    • "Getting Ready" Zoom sessions to guide students through onboarding processes (organized by the Graduate School) – Dec 15, 9:00am and Jan 6, 1:00pm
    • Orientation for new international students (organized by International Student and Scholar Services) – Jan 9-12
    • Welcome session for all new grad students (organized by the Graduate School) – Jan 11 (in-person, 9:00am; virtual, 1:00pm)
  • Getting Started Checklists and Tutorials

In addition to in-person and virtual sessions to support new graduate students, the Graduate School also has checklists and tutorials on our website to guide incoming graduate students through the K-State onboarding process (e.g., enrolling in classes, accessing technology). The Graduate School graduated 315 students this past Friday at Bramlage Coliseum. These are the statistics for the class:

  • There were 252 masters and 63 doctorial graduates
  • 59% identified as females and 41% identified as males
  • 38% were from Kansas and 62% were from other places
  • 38% were international students

History was made yesterday with 85 graduate students registering for the 2023 Three Minute Thesis competition, more than doubling the number of participants (39) in the 2022 competition! This year, we also have a record number of colleges (8) and graduate programs (37) represented by registrants. View a list of registered students.

Funding for Graduate Students

January 1, 2023 is the application deadline for graduate students to be considered for a GSC travel award for conferences or other professional activities that have a start date anytime in March. NOTE: Graduate students who plan to give a presentation at a conference but are not informed if their presentation submission has been accepted prior to the GSC travel award application deadline, are still expected to apply for the travel award by the deadline. In the application, students should indicate that they plan to give a presentation. If allocated a travel award, the award will be contingent upon the student providing verification that their presentation was accepted for the conference.

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program honors female scientists at a critical stage in their careers with grants of $60,000 each. The program is seeking five exceptional female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.

Eligibility

  • Candidates are selected from a variety of fields including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen/permanent resident
  • Candidates must have completed their PhD and have started in their postdoctoral position by the application deadline—January 27, 2023, 5:00pm ET.

Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is currently accepting applications for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Postdoctoral Research Program. The Application deadline is January 11,2023 at 5:00 pm EST.

Participants acquire experience and training in areas of fusion and plasma science and technology, interact with outstanding scientists and engineers, and have access to advanced equipment and facilities. Research must support the program mission, specifically in the following areas:

  • Burning Plasma Science: Foundations
  • Burning Plasma Science: Long Pulse
  • Discovery Plasma Science

Benefits Include: Annual Stipend (paid monthly): $90,000, plus a supplement towards the cost of health insurance. Relocation Allowance: $3,000.00, if the assigned hosting facility is more than 50 miles from the current address shown on the application form. Travel Allowance: $4,000.00 per year to attend Fusion related domestic conferences or events. Foreign Travel (optional) must be addressed in the application.

The deadline for the Department of Energy 2023 Scholars Program is January 23, 2023 at 8:00 am EST. This is a department-wide program designed to create a pipeline of highly qualified talent in disciplinary fields that support mission critical areas of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The program provides opportunities designed to introduce DOE missions, functions, and operations to talented undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates.

The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) is currently accepting applications through January 18, 2023. This program has been supporting graduate studies since 1991.

The DOE CSGF is available to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at an accredited U.S. university; senior undergraduates and first-year graduate students are eligible to apply. The benefits of this program are listed below.

  • A $45,000 yearly stipend
  • Payment of full tuition and required fees
  • Yearly program review participation
  • An annual professional development allowance
  • A 12-week DOE laboratory research practicum experience
